Book Review — Finding Vigano: In Search of the Man Whose Testimony Shook the Church and the World.

I think all faithful Catholics around the world are weary of the crisis that has afflicted the Church Christ founded. The cover-up of sexual abuse by bishops and priest. The financial corruption and so much more. I knew all this when I converted to Catholicism on August 15th 2018. The Church was already on fire. Little did I know that in less than two weeks a barrel of petroleum was going to be thrown on it, when on the 25th of August, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano released an eleven-page testimony that rocked the world. In it, he called out the corruption of the Church, especially in regards to the sexual abuse crisis, that is rightly, not a clerical problem but a homosexual one. He addressed most specifically the case of disgraced Cardinal Theodore McCarrick and also to the shock of the Church, calling Pope Francis to resign. Many believed this was wrong. Then Vigano went into hiding.

The book records the life and events of the archbishop, his career and retirement. The author Robert Moynthan gives an in-depth commentary on the whole of Vigano’s testimony. After eventually contacting Carlos Vigano, Moynthan travelled to an undisclosed country, in a monastery and interviewed Vigano. He wanted to know that he was like, and to know more about the man. For me, I found Vigano to be a nice man who loves the Church, he wants to see it renewed. He cries several times over the state it is in. He believes he is telling the truth and that Pope Francis is lying. He talks of fatherhood, that it is natural for a man and a woman to think about having children when he considered to become a priest. It is all very interesting. It was stated that the author and the publisher don’t endorse everything Vigano said or did. This book went to press before the McCarrick report was finally released in November 2020. There promises to be a follow-up book to discuss topics that couldn’t be included in this volume. I assume it will also include new interviews. I for one like the fact that Vigano was willing to speak up at least and bring all this evil and the silence of the Church into the light. He loves the Church. If anything, Vigano is awaking people. It is all out in the open now. He prayers for Pope Francis daily and everyone else as we all should. Is the biggest crisis the Church is in? I don’t know, but Vigano is the person all Catholic Christians need right now.
